Carlos V. Biographical information

My name is Carlos Valdes, I am a Senior at Hoover High School.  I was born in Mexico City 17 years ago, and I will turn 18 this year on February 11.  I am interested in working with computers, graphic design, and I also like to play paintball.  Next year when I graduate, hopefully  I will go to a community college for two years and then transfer to a college like UCSD or SDSU.

Hi, My name is Jonathan Miranda and I'm a senior at Hoover High School.  I'm from Mexico and I have lived in San Diego for almost 3 years.  My favorite subjects are English and Math. I also play sports for my school; I play football and soccer. Sports are my favorite thing but I also enjoy reading. By reading I improved my communication skills and learned more English. After I graduate from high school, I want to go to a junior college and then transfer to a university.

Questions and answers about the purpose of this website.

  1. What is a canon? What are our criteria for works included in the canon?
    • A canon is a list of books that are considered essential or important readings to understand literature based on particular subjects, time, theme, etc. 
  2. What makes a book important enough or good enough to be included in our canon?
    • For us to include a good piece of literature in our canon, the book has to makes us wiser about life and the nature of human experience. It should also give us a new perspective be letting us explore other imaginary worlds. 
  3. What is literature? What makes good literature?
    • Literature tells you about how other people, times, and cultures viewed the world. Good literature makes you see and feel what the writer talked about.
  4. What texts represent these qualities? How do they do this?
    • Any kind of text can have these qualities because literature can be written in a lot of ways.
  5. What are these books about? What qualities do they share?
    • This books are about anything; they just have to share the same qualities or be kind of the same in that they teach the reader something.
  6. What kinds of genre are we including?
    • In our canon web page we are including: science fiction, novels, fantasy, nonfiction and autobiography.

 This book is about the invasion of earth by a strange race of creatures from Mars, written by H. G. Wells.
One night an old man found a container where creatures laid inside. After trying to get them out, one side of the container opened and the creatures were seen.  A moment later an enormous machine emerged from the container. This machine had long tentacles which helped it to walk. One of the tentacles carried a strange device that a moment later fired a laser beam, killing people and destroying the city nearby England.

Before I read this book I never thought about child abuse or anything like that.  This book will make you think about how serious the problem with child abuse is and will make you feel fortunate for the life you have.

The Alchemist

This was the first book I ever read and my favorite one. This book is about dreams and how you can reach them by working hard. The end of the book is pretty good and will satisfy you.

Never Die Easy

by Walter Payton, Don Yaeger

This is one of my favorite books about sports.  Walter Payton was one of the best running backs in the NFL and the biggest star of the Chicago Bears. In this book, relates his life and his  best moments. It also talks about his heroic final battle with cancer.

La Vida Loca

by Luis J. Rodriguez

Publisher: Fireside (January 13, 1996)

This books is a good one. It's about the author's life growing up in street gangs in L.A, and mistakes you make in life and bad choices you sometimes make. It's based on real life and really makes you see how the real world can be. But it also lets you see that, even though you commit so many errors, you still can change and do something better with your life.
